Komatsu America has tasked our team to create a VR experience that simulates the mandatory PreOp Inspection Komatsu operators must learn and perform before using any piece of machinery.

This training process can be time-consuming and costly, as it requires bringing an excavator on-site and enough trainees out to make it worth the time. This VR Haptic Pre-Op Experience aims to reduce costs, optimize training, and be a new way to train.

User Experience for VR

It gets tricky.

Designing user interfaces for virtual reality is tricky. Add another layer when you design for use of HaptX gloves that give users a real touch sensation when they interact with virtual objects.

How do we include the necessary information (which is a lot when dealing with a 15+ ton machine) in a meaningful and understandable way? Additionally, what do you need to consider when most of your users have never interfaced with VR?

This is what we came up with.
